Throughout human history, people have wanted to know the future. In Jesus’ day, people would travel to Delphi, Greece to consult the Pythia, the title of the high priestess in the Temple of Apollo. There is evidence that through breathing vapors that emerged from the ground, this woman would enter a trance-like state during which she would offer guidance to those who sought it – of course, for a fee. Unfortunately, as with any type of paganism, this practice opened the seeker to hucksterism at best, and demonic influence at worst.
For a Christian, part of obedient living is seeking God’s guidance. He or she longs to know God’s will so as to pursue it. But what do we mean by God’s will? How can we discern it? And what affect will this have on our future? In this series, How Should I Know?, we’ll examine these questions and more in light of what the Bible teaches. As Paul prayed, we long for you to be “filled with the knowledge of His will.” (Colossians 1:9)
